Dr Claude Smythe
Chief Surgeon of St Mathers Asylum
The oldest doctor in St Mathers. He wears a surgeons mask to hide his disfigured face, a mouth full of razor sharp teeth without lips.
He appears to subscribe to a model of surgery, medication and Pavlovian conditioning, rather than Jungian or Freudian psychology. Imposed external order, as the solution to internal chaos.
To combat the mania developed by some survivors of the plague, he developed a technique where a thin layer, no more than a few millimetres, of the brain is ‘shaved’ off.
He claims that the procedure was never performed on Domovoi.
His patients are certainly calm, orderly and apparently content.
